Tooth sensitivity, also known as dentin hypersensitivity,

occurs when the underlying dentin of a tooth becomes exposed.

Several factors can contribute to tooth sensitivity:

  • Worn Tooth Enamel: Enamel is the protective outer layer of the tooth. When enamel wears away due to aggressive brushing, acidic foods or drinks, or teeth grinding (bruxism), the underlying dentin can become exposed, leading to sensitivity.

  • Gum Recession: Gum recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth pulls back, exposing the tooth roots. Since the roots are not protected by enamel, they are more susceptible to sensitivity.

  • Tooth Decay: Tooth decay, also known as cavities, can lead to sensitivity when it reaches the dentin layer of the tooth.

  • Fractured Teeth: Cracked or fractured teeth can expose the dentin and cause sensitivity, particularly when biting or chewing.

  • Acidic Foods and Beverages: Consuming acidic foods and beverages, such as citrus fruits, soda, or vinegar-based products, can erode tooth enamel over time and contribute to sensitivity.

  • Dental Procedures: Some dental procedures, such as teeth whitening treatments, dental cleanings, or fillings, may cause temporary sensitivity. This usually resolves on its own but should be discussed with your dentist if it persists.

  • Bruxism: Grinding or clenching your teeth, especially during sleep, can wear down enamel and expose the dentin, leading to sensitivity.

  • Excessive Plaque Buildup: Plaque buildup on the teeth can lead to gum disease and subsequent gum recession, which can expose the dentin and cause sensitivity.

  • Cracked Fillings or Crowns: A cracked or loose filling or crown can expose the underlying tooth structure, leading to sensitivity.

  • Tooth Whitening Products: Some over-the-counter or professional tooth whitening products can cause temporary sensitivity in some individuals.

To manage tooth sensitivity, consider the following steps:

●      Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush gently to avoid further enamel erosion.

●      Use a toothpaste specifically formulated for sensitive teeth.

●      Avoid acidic foods and drinks.

●      Wear a mouthguard at night if you grind your teeth.

●      Practice good oral hygiene habits, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups.

●      For severe sensitivity you doctor may also suggest Root Canal Treatment

If you experience persistent or severe tooth sensitivity, it's essential to consult your dentist to determine the underlying cause and receive appropriate treatment.
